Recently, the IABM asked our Managing Director, Gordon Reid, to write a short article explaining the background to audio restoration and noise suppression, to describe where these techniques currently sit in the audio engineer's toolbox, and speculate about where they might lead in the future. He was delighted to do so, and the resulting piece has just been published in the IABM Journal.
In it, Gordon talks about the earliest restoration processes and the importance of developing real-time processing, as well as the need for near-zero latency if noise suppression was to be made usable in a broadcast environment. He then discusses the trade-off between listenability and intelligibility, and takes a brief look at the future of the field. He concluded, "Arthur C Clarke once wrote that, 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'. He forgot to add that, once it enters common usage it soon becomes accepted, if not mundane."
